Lutostanski receives Hero Award

WMVFC and BCoFD Truck 8 member William (Will) Lutostanski has been recognized as one of the Top 25 Heroes of 2011 by Fire House Magazine. Will, while working as a Fire Specialist on Truck 8 during the 2011 multi-alarm fire that took the life of Lutherville VFC member Mark Falkenhan, rescued a woman and subsequently saved her life. Along with Lt. Dave Dryden of Truck 8 (also recognized as a 2011 Hero), Lutostanski removed an unconscious woman from an apartment on fire just before the intense heat and smoke caused a flash-over. Shielding the woman with his own body during the flash-over saved her from deadly burns. Some have likened a flash-over to a large wave of boiling fire rolling over people on the floor. His and Dave Dryden's awareness of conditions leading to a flash-over and their quick actions to protect the woman, underscores their professionalism, dedication to the community and personal courage. The members of White Marsh Volunteer Fire Company salute our Life Member and past Company Captain; along with all of the recepients of the Top 25 Heroes of 2011....

Thanks to The Traffic Group

We want to thank The Traffic Group for volunteering to provide traffic counters in front of the station as part of our documentation of vehicle flow past our station. An amazing almost 12,000 cars and trucks drive in front of us each day. While not surprising to those familiar with the Rt 7 and Cowenton-Ebenezer Road area, we had no factual information on which to base some decisions. The communities we serve have experienced a tremedous explosion of residential & business building the past five+ years; leading to the great increase in demands for our medical & fire services. When WMVFC's emergency units left exit the station they have to negotiate the narrow intersection of Philadelphia & Ebenezer Roads to respond on an emergency call. Vechicles turning right onto Ebenezer Road at that same time can not see our approaching units and can further block the intersection.Vehicles from Pulaski Hwy often cross the railroad tracks and increase speed past our station on the way to Philadelphia Road. We ask everyone to pay attention to our emergency lights and stop prior to the front of the station to allow our trucks to make turns onto this narrow road. Especially, please do not cross in front of the station until our vehicles are all the way inside when backing. The study by The Traffic Group is part of our long term planning to assure our safe and effective emergency responses. The main building, located at 5419 Ebenezer Road, was originally built by its members....

Cadet program begun March 15th

White Marsh Volunteer Fire Company started its new CADET program for young people, aged 12-15 years who are interested in the fire & EMS services. The kickoff meeting for parents and potential CADETs on March 15th saw six young people joining the program. President Kevin Palmer told those attending he was happy to see this revival of a prior WMVFC CADET program that has seen two prior CADETs growing into a career in local fire departments and who are still active in WMVFC today. While CADETs can not participate in dangerous activities or ride on equipment during emergencies, they begin to learn the many skills and knowledge used by firefighters and EMTs. Meeting nights will be the third Thursday of each month from 6:30 - 8:00pm. There will be other social and learning field trips and projects outside the station. CADETs will be able to ride in parades on out-of-service equipment. Parents are encouraged to assist.A separate CADET application can be obtained at the station and filed for $25 fee (which will go towards CADET t-shirts/sweatshirts). We encourage CADETs to place school work as a priority. Leaders for the program will be Bill Wychlus and Kat Wren. Contact the station at 410.335.5112 for additional information or to leave a message for Kat or Bill. ...

The annual Bull & Shrimp 'Roast' was held on January 13th at Columbus Gardens from 8 pm -- 12:30 am.
Besides the feast of beef, steamed shrimp and lots more, there was a silent auction with lots of sports memorbilia, door prizes, wheels of chance and the big 50-50 raffle drawing (the winner walked away with over $700). Music by a local DJ had people dancing to a variety of tunes and just plain good times with friends.
Look for our next one around the same time (January) in 2013. For more information , contact Christina at emtptina@aol.com.

Baltimore Co Fire Department Associate Trauma Surgeon Dr. Matt Belan, also a member of WMVFC, is pictured here teaching advanced airways with a new device called a Glidescope Ranger. This training session was held at WMVFC for volunteer and career Paramedics in Baltimore County. This video screen 'Glidescope' device makes securing difficult airways much easier and less traumatic. The device was purchased using federal grants-your tax dollars at work right back here in Baltimore County.

Members will also be receiving practical advanced training on the video airway device during a December training by Dr. David Vitberg, also a Baltimore County Fire Department Associate Trauma Surgeon. The sessions will be held at the MD Anatomy Board lab next to Shock-Trauma....
